Great Barrier Reef seen from cosmos (source: Wikipedia) Article Code-no: Attract-Aus-En-01 from 05.21.2012

The Great Barrier Reef made by living organisms known as coral polyps is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland in north-east Australia. It is composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for over 2,600 kilometres over an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometres and can be seen from outer space - see the satellite photo. A large part of the reef is protected by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) which helps to limit the impact of human use, such as fishing, marine tourism etc. How you can help the Reef? Ordinary people are doing extraordinary things every day to help to protect the environment and the Great Barrier Reef through programs such as Reef Guardians - see Get involved too. AMPTO  - The Association of Marine Park Tourism Operators works closely with the GBRMPA to conti-nually monitor and improve management of the reef. Since 1981 is Great Barrier Reef an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tourism to the reef generates 4 - 5 billion AU$ per year. Video 1, 2, 3
